Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) was formed on 5 July 1997 when Lalu Prasad Yadav parted ways with the Janata Dal to form a new political platform. The party quickly established itself as a major force in Bihar, with Lalu’s image as a leader of the marginalized gaining widespread support.
Under his leadership, RJD governed Bihar either directly or through alliances from 1997 to 2005, with Rabri Devi (Lalu’s wife) serving as Chief Minister for three terms. The party has since remained influential, often playing a key role in coalition governments both at the state and national levels.
